The DS720+ is a storage solution for small businesses and even homes that require an additional solution for network backup and data management. This server can be considered desktop if we look at its dimensions of 166 x 106 x 223 mm and a weight of 1.50 kg . Once we have it in our hands, we check the good finishes it presents and the robust construction in black matte plastic. On an aesthetic level, it meets what can be expected in a product of this type.

Compact body for a desktop NAS

On the front we have the two front access slots for 3.5 or 2.5-inch SATA HDDs or SSDs. Also a USB 3.0, power button and the different status LEDs of the attached units. To extract these units, simply lift the lower tab and access the slots. Very easy to attach and change units without fighting with screwdrivers. On the other hand, at the base of the NAS we have the two slots for M.2 NVMe SSD memory (SSD cache) , hidden under two covers.

Lower slots to add SSD memories

To continue, the rear features a huge fan to evacuate hot air. It’s also the place of choice for its two Gigabit Ethernet ports, USB 3.2 Gen 1, eSATA connector, power, and Kensington security. Finally, it is worth reviewing the contents of the box with an installation guide in our language, a compact power supply, network cables and screws to anchor the 2.5-inch HDD and SSD units.

Technical features and connections

Inside the Synology DSM 7 we find a 14nm Intel Celeron J4125 CPU , 4 cores at 2GHz (turbo up to 2.7GHz). This CPU with 4MB cache features low power consumption as it has a TPD of 10w. This processor incorporates AES-NI hardware encryption, which we will use for FTPES or SFTP transfers of AES-encrypted files. A higher performance than seen in the Synology DS220+ with a Celeron J4025. It is accompanied by an integrated Intel UHD 600 GPU that allows us to transcode hardware video with a maximum 4K resolution, ideal for use in multimedia services such as Plex.

RAM memory expansion on the internal side

It also includes a 2 GB DDR4 RAM module with the possibility of adding another 4 GB if we need it, reaching a total of 6 GB. Except for running virtual machines or demanding applications, the original RAM is more than enough. On the other hand, this Synology DS720+ supports hard drives up to 16TB and can work with only one drive installed.

As we had anticipated, the NAS has two slots for HDD or SSD drives with a SATA3 interface. In addition, it allows hot swapping of drives. On the other hand, the two slots M2. NVMe for SSD cache dramatically improve the performance of Synology DSM 7, avoiding potential bottlenecks with storage drives. Then we have the 2 USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports with a transfer rate of 5 Gbps and an eSATA port, but there is no trace of a possible PCIe slot.

Finally, the 2 Gigabit Ethernet network ports will be used to transfer data at 1 Gbps. However, these ports can be switched with link aggregation, thus reaching a rate of 2 Gbps. However, it would have been desirable to have 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports even if its final sale price increased.

Configuration and software

NAS setup is tailored for even the most novice with the easy -to-use Synology DSM 7 operating system . Its intuitive configuration wizard is responsible for recognizing the drives, available networks and partition management. You can choose between two file systems: Btrfs (with the possibility of capturing) or ext4 (better performance). As well as it also gives us the choice of the type of RAID that we want to grant to our NAS: greater flexibility to create several volumes or greater performance in the case of using a single volume for the entire RAID.

This DSM acts as a conventional operating system but inside a browser, being able to access via IP address. In fact, its interface is quite similar to that of a PC with the use of multiple tools and services with striking icons. Among them we highlight the following: Synology Office (documents, PDFs, etc), Chat (alternative to Skype), Surveillance Station (surveillance system), Multimedia or Virtual Machine (virtual machines). Plus, we’re always backed by your brand support and ongoing firmware updates.

But the Synology DS720+ gives much more of itself when we do it with external applications. For example, it can be used for a Plex media server and access all our stored content (4K video transcoding). The synchronization and work of platforms like Google Drive or DropBox. With VTiger CRM support from companies that allow different work departments to be unified with unified data. Everything related to hosting websites like WordPress without the need to hire a professional service, all under our supervision. And we cannot forget the possibility of keeping our files synchronized and making backup copies (Naviko).

Availability and price of the Synology DS720+

In conclusion, this Synology DS720+ NAS has everything you need to perform perfectly in home and small business environments. The performance of its CPU and GPU ensures smooth work, especially if we make use of its RAM expansion and the two M.2 NVMe slots for SSD cache acceleration. Its wizard and operating system is intuitive and easy to use, with a large number of free applications to make the most of its possibilities. We reward with the Gold .

  • Robust design and quiet fan
  • M.2 NVMe slots for SSD cache
  • RAM memory expansion
  • eSATA port
  • Good read and write performance
  • Smooth operating system and multitude of applications available to install directly on the NAS drive
