These are exceptional times, times of confinement that force people to stay in their homes. Covid-19 has completely changed our lifestyle, but How has it affected Internet use in 2020? We all know that, in recent years, the consumption of online content was increasing. Data rates grew as we needed them, and at home the WiFi was increasingly needing speed. Today we are going to focus on the question of knowing what has been the evolution of Internet use since the beginning of the health crisis.

Has Internet use changed a lot in 2020?

According to the data provided by DE-CIX, During the months of March and April, the use of the Internet in 2020 has increased considerably. During the last two years, the average consumption of Gigabites per second had progressively increased to reach 400 Gb per second at the beginning of this year. But with the crisis caused by Covid-19, the rise has been meteoric, reaching peaks of 500 Gb per second, a scandalous and unthinkable figure a few months ago.

All of this growth has hit the global Internet infrastructure hard. All the companies that use this medium as the main axis of their activity have noticed the change. WhatsApp, for example, had a growth in the traffic of its application within the Internet of more than 600%. These data are overwhelming, but not at all exceptional, since another sector such as gaming registered a rise of 270%. If the network is ready, this change is something we will talk about later.

What are the reasons for this growth?

When they talk to us about greater Internet consumption, the hours we spend watching Netflix or making video calls with the family come to mind. But there are many reasons that have led to this growth and that make this great evolution make much more sense.

First of all, it should be noted that confinement has forced most companies to develop your work electronically. At the beginning of the state of alarm, Spain had reached its historical maximum of teleworking with 7.9%. But the situation has forced this figure to increase temporarily, and this fully affects the use of the Internet simultaneously. In the same way, online education has also been a necessityAnd all those hours that the youngest spent in the centers are now spent at home.

Teleworking has increased a lot in the last year and the coronavirus has forced further growth

Another important aspect is the increase in news consumption. We all want to be informed of the latest news related to Covid-19 and for this, we mostly use the network. According to data from Comscore, in Spain, news consumption has increased by 59%, although the evolution has been similar in all countries of the world.

It is convenient to highlight other leisure-related activities that have become essential. Now we can go out to play sports, but for many weeks we have had to do it at home. Online gym classes, or Internet tutorials to lead a healthy life have been of great help. And we must not forget other activities that have replaced day-to-day activities, such as consuming music, video games or social networks.

Is the network in danger due to Internet use in 2020?

According to telecom experts, we shouldn’t worry about a massive network outage. This fact is more than unlikely, the bandwidth is wide enough to support current traffic. Even so, several Spanish telephone companies have warned in a joint statement of the need for a responsible use of telecommunications.

In this release, Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, Grupo MasMovil and Grupo Euskaltel, talk about the great increase in communications. Regarding the Internet, there is an increase of 40% in the use of IP networks, while the use of data has grown by 25%. They thus recommend that a responsible use of the network be made, taking into account the new needs in terms of education and online work. In addition, these groups have given a series of tips that are worth highlighting:

  • Make completely necessary downloads: do not download files if we are not going to make use of them, and to do so, it better be during what they have called “off-peak hours”. Between two and four in the afternoon, and all night, are the ideal hours to download, since the traffic is much lower.
  • Do not send very large files: better to send storage routes on the network and if you choose to send files, compress them first in some other format.
  • Use collaboration tools: They are a great option since they reduce consumption, in addition, it is better to do it without video activation.
  • Optimize network traffic: this is the most general and includes all the others. Avoid mass emails, reserve important things for little frequented hours and whenever possible, try not to monopolize the Internet too much with an excess of active tabs.

We must not forget that, Spain is one of the benchmarks in telecommunications. It is the first country in Europe and the third in the world in fiber optic infrastructure and in general it is prepared for all this situation and the possible evolution that it may follow. No need to worry about a possible restriction due to increased traffic, because this is not going to happen. What we must do is pay special attention to our individual use of the network. Most of the time, this use is not responsible and we increase traffic unnecessarily.

Finally, we want to make a warning, and that is that you pay special care to the pages that you access during this crisis. The number of cyber scams is increasing, as many fraudulent organizations are trying to take advantage of this exceptional situation. In addition, with the large number of hours we spend in front of the screen, computers suffer. Find out how to improve PC performance and most importantly; nor be fooled and be responsible in the use of the Internet.
